The benefits of orthodontic treatment can last a lifetime with proper retainer use. At Alinea Orthodontics, we emphasize the importance of wearing your retainers as directed to ensure your smile remains beautifully aligned. Here’s what you need to know to keep your smile perfect for years to come.
Why Retainers Are Essential
After removing your braces or other orthodontic appliances, you will receive retainers to stabilize the results. The bone and soft tissues around your teeth need several months to fully stabilize. Wearing your retainers as instructed is crucial to prevent undesirable tooth movement and avoid the need for additional treatment.
Types of Orthodontic Retainers
Removable Retainers
Teeth may shift throughout life, so it’s important to wear retainers indefinitely. Initially, wear your retainers as much as possible for the first year after braces removal. After this period, switch to nighttime wear. Dr. Jose Enrique Ortiz will schedule check-ups every six to nine months and X-rays every 18 months to monitor your progress and evaluate wisdom teeth. Once your wisdom teeth are assessed, wear your retainer at least one night per week. This helps counteract natural muscle tightening that can affect teeth alignment.

How to Care for Removable Retainers
Proper care extends the life of your retainers and ensures their effectiveness:
- Clean Regularly: Brush your retainer gently with a toothbrush and mild liquid soap. Use a denture cleaning solution, such as Efferdent, to remove plaque and tartar. Rinse thoroughly to remove any cleanser residue.
- Avoid Heat: Retainers are made from thermoplastic materials sensitive to high temperatures. Keep them away from heaters, dishwashers, and car dashboards where temperatures exceed 115°F.
- Proper Storage: When not in use, always store your retainer in its designated case to prevent damage and contamination.
- Pet Safety: Protect your retainer from pets to prevent chewing and damage.
- Replacement: Retainers will need periodic replacement. Your initial treatment contract includes one set of retainers post-braces. If retainers are lost or damaged, a replacement fee will apply. Contact our office immediately if your retainer becomes loose or breaks.
Fixed Retainers (Bonded Wire)
Fixed retainers are designed to stay on permanently. They may only be removed if your dentist identifies gum or bone problems. If such issues arise, replace the fixed retainer with a removable one, as directed by Dr. Ortiz. Regular monitoring by your family dentist during your six-month check-ups is essential to ensure the fixed retainer continues to serve its purpose without complications.
